Survey on Coordinate Databases (Conference/Symposium/Event)
Department of Psychology, York University
We
have recently published a commentary on the creation of a comprehensive
coordinate database in NeuroImage. In this article, we review existing
coordinate databases and discuss the importance of building a
coordinate database containing all neuroimaging papers. As we feel that
the neuroimaging community should be consulted about the relevant
issues concerning such a database (e.g., utility, essential features,
possible approaches), we have created a brief survey. The results of
this survey shall be published in order to inform future database
development.
The questionnaire is available here:
http://www.tinyurl.com/db-survey
We
want to collect the views of as many neuroimagers as possible, so
please take this opportunity to voice your opinion! And please forward
this e-mail to any interested colleagues. The questionnaire can be
filled out without having read the article; however, it might be
helpful to have read the paper first.
The article can be downloaded here:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2009.01.053
Please
also note that in the same issue there are four published responses to
our commentary, written by Antonia Hamilton, Finn Nielsen, David Van
Essen, and Angie Laird, Jack Lancaster, and Peter Fox.
If you have any questions about our article or the questionnaire, feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Jan Derrfuss (jan.derrfuss@nf.mpg.de | http://www.jan-derrfuss.de)

P.S.
Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this e-mail. We felt it
would be important to try to reach as many in the community as possible
and therefore posted to multiple mailing lists.

Singularity Summit: Oct 3-4, 2009
When Machines Re-Invent You
Famed inventor Ray Kurzweil argues that in coming decades advanced
technologies will re-make the world. During this so-called
“Technological Singularity,” all of humanity's problems could be
solved: poverty, disease, even death itself.
Other luminaries, such as Stephen Hawking and Sun Microsystems
co-founder Bill Joy, agree with Kurzweil, but warn that such changes
could include human extinction.
What should we make of such extraordinary claims? Come to New York
City on October 3 and 4, 2009 and find out.
The most acclaimed experts in fields such as quantum computing,
neuroengineering, DNA nanotechnology, life extension, brain emulation,
consciousness, virtual worlds, artificial and natural intelligence,
and more will describe their latest research and discuss its
implications for the future of humanity.
Featured Speakers:
* Ray Kurzweil, inventor, entrepreneur, and author of The Singularity
is Near. Bill Gates called him “the best person I know at predicting
the future…”
* Peter Thiel, President of Clarium Capital Management, seed investor
in Facebook, Managing Partner of Founders Fund, and co-founder of
PayPal
* Dr. David Chalmers, Director of the Centre for Consciousness, author
of The Conscious Mind, and one of the world's foremost philosophers
* Dr. Ed Boyden, Professor of Biological Engineering and Brain and
Cognitive Sciences at MIT
* Dr. Aubrey de Grey, Director of Research at the SENS Foundation,
author of Ending Aging, and creator of the Methusaleh Prize
* Dr. Jurgen Schmidhuber, Director of the Swiss Institute for
Artificial Intelligence

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral fellow to join the research team in Dr. Moshe Bar’s laboratory at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital. Research in the lab focuses on issues in high-level vision with an emphasis on the dynamics of object recognition and visual memory. More specifically, we are interested in how the brain uses contextual associations (i.e., knowledge of which things tend to co-occur in an environment) to facilitate object recognition and to elucidate how visual properties of both objects and people elicit affective responses and first impressions (see http://barlab.mgh.harvard.edu for more information about our work). The research involves functional neuroimaging (fMRI), combined with high-temporal resolution imaging (MEG). While experience in either technique is an advantage, it is not required. - Got a brain? Looking to understand how it makes sense of the world and gives rise to behavior? Ever considered applying to a graduate program in cognitive neuroscience? A few Research Assistant positions are now available in Dr. Moshe Bar’s Visual NeuroCognition Laboratory (Harvard Medical School and MGH, Charlestown). Among the many topics explored by the lab, we are currently interested in understanding how the brain uses contextual associations (i.e., knowledge of which things tend to co-occur in an environment) to facilitate object recognition and to elucidate how visual properties of both objects and people elicit affective responses and first impressions (see http://barlab.mgh.harvard.edu for more information about our work). Combining psychophysical methods with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) we are able to characterize the cortical mechanisms underlying these processes, and track the flow of information in the cortex with an outstanding spatial and temporal resolution. As an RA in the lab you will help develop and run behavioral studies and learn how to collect and analyze brain-imaging data. In addition to having exposure to the world’s most cutting-edge technologies and developing unique and highly marketable research skills, the position provides immense intellectual reward. Research Assistants are involved in all stages of research projects, from the conception of a hypothesis to the writing and submission of a research manuscript. If the chance to explore the relationship between the mind and the brain, to broaden your knowledge of cognitive neuroscience and to co-author a research paper piques your interest, contact: bar@nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
