Conference/Symposium/Event
fMRI Visiting Fellowship Programs: October, 2011
Functional MRI
Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging
Massachusetts General Hospital
The 5-day Visiting
Fellowship Program in Functional MRI has been held more than 50 times since its
inception in October of 1994. It is a world-renown introduction to the basics
of Functional MRI, presented in an intense workshop that emphasizes
experimental design in the context of a thorough grounding in image
acquisition, task design, data analysis and a collection of "cautionary
tales" to give the participant a good feel for the pitfalls of fMRI-based
research, as well as its power. It is held at the home of the first human
functional MRI experiments: The Athinoula A. Martinos Center For Biomedical Imaging
of the Massachusetts General Hospital, near Boston, Massachusetts.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide a serious
introduction to this field. It is primarily intended for people new to the
field, and for those who have had some experience but seek a more thorough and
principled introduction.
CURRICULUM
Students will receive a firm grounding in the fundamentals
of fMRI. This will include the basic physics of MR imaging, the biology and
biophysics of the hemodynamic responses to neural activity, the principles of
fMRI data analysis (including both exploratory and statistical analysis),
stimulus presentation and response recording in the context of high magnetic
fields and electromagnetic pulses, and the design of perceptual and cognitive
experiments.
A special emphasis of the course will be the design,
implementation, and execution of perceptual and/or cognitive experiments by the
participants. Participants will break into small groups to design their own
fMRI experiments. Barring unforeseen problems, some of these experiments will
be executed, and the resulting data analyzed, on the final day of the course.
The core faculty is drawn from the staff of the Athinoula A.
Martinos Center (of the Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts
Institute of Technology) and affiliated faculty from Harvard University, Boston
University, McLean Hospital and other institutions.
NOTE: While a large fraction of the workshop is spent
addressing the many issues associated with the analysis of fMRI data, this is
NOT a course to teach a specific software package. Other workshops, devoted to
specific packages, are available at Martinos and at other institutions.

SPM8 Training in Boston & Chicago; General fMRI Training in Pittsburgh
General (2011Jun13 Pittsburgh); SPM8 Training (2011Jun20 Boston)
Neurometrika.org
Research Training and Software Training: Two
Upcoming Courses in Pittsburgh and Boston; Additional courses in Guangzhou and
Chicago.
Pittsburgh: FMRI in Clinical Research and Practice (**NEW PROGRAM**)

Boston: SPM8 for Basic and Clinical Investigators
Course Code: 2011Jun20 Course Dates: June 20-24, 2011
Neurometrika continues to offer week-long hands-on training in fMRI-based
research and data analysis.
The new program “Functional MRI in Clinical Research and Practice: Measurement,
Design and Analysis” will give clinical investigators an intensive introduction
to the issues associated with using functional MRI (and associated structural
MRI) in neuroscience studies associated with clinical research. Topics will
include the basic principles of MRI measurement, techniques for stimulus
presentation and response recording in high magnetic fields, basic statistical
methods, individual subject experimental design and analysis techniques, group
design and analysis techniques, clinical study design principles and guidelines
for reporting clinical neuroimaging studies. It is a basic program that is
suitable for all who may be using or conducting fMRI-based research with a
clinical orientation. It will cover all aspects of doing or using fMRI-based
research in clinical contexts EXCEPT hands-on computer training for a specific
analysis package (for which see the other Neurometrika offerings). This program
will be offered for the first time in Pittsburgh, June 13-17, 2011.
The popular “SPM8 for Basic and Clinical Investigators” will be given in Boston
in June during the week immediately prior to the Organization for Human Brain
Mapping meeting in Quebec City. The primary software for this program will be
SPM8, with extensive discussion of a variety of software tools that extend the
power of SPM8. Please note that this program requires that you bring your own
laptop, and that this is a program that does assume a modest level of
experience with functional MRI experimentation and statistics. The emphasis in
this program is on hands-on use of the tools. Theory is presented and discussed,
but primarily as an adjunct to the active use of the tools.
Please see the links below for more details about the programs.

Postdoctoral Position Available
Laboratory of Russell Epstein
Center for Cognitive Neuroscience
University of Pennsylvania
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Russell Epstein at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania. Funding for this position comes from the Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center (SILC), an NSF-supported project that brings together researchers from several institutions and disciplines. The successful applicant will work on fMRI studies of spatial navigation, with the aim of understanding how large-scale environments are encoded in the human brain and how spatial representations vary with experience and navigational ability. Although the position is based at Penn, it is expected that the applicant will also forge collaborations with SILC faculty at other institutions, including Temple University, Northwestern, and the University of Chicago. Previous fMRI experience and some degree of computational/mathematical sophistication is desirable; a strong interest in spatial cognition is essential. The Center for Cognitive Neuroscience has recently moved into new facilities and is a lively, friendly, collaborative environment. Philadelphia is a vibrant, affordable, cosmopolitan city. To apply, send a brief statement of research interests, CV, and contact information for three references to Russell Epstein, epstein@psych.upenn.edu.
