Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our 2010 meeting in Montreal!  All of the sessions were fantastic and we appreciate the hard work of everyone involved.  Montreal is a beautiful and charming city and we hope you were able to get out and enjoy it a bit.

Our 18th CNS Annual Meeting will be from April 2-5, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, California. We look forward to seeing you there!

Call for CNS Committee positions for 2010.  There will be vacancies in several CNS committees, including the Young Investigator Award Committee, the Program Committee (Symposium), and the Governing Board.   The Cognitive Neuroscience Society invites you to nominate colleagues, who are members of CNS, to serve on any of these committees. Self-nominations are welcome too. Appointments are typically for a five year term.

 

Program Committee:  In the fall you will review and accept/decline the symposium submissions for the 2011 meeting. You will work with the committee to create an interesting, cutting edge and balanced program based on the submitted proposals.

 

YIA Committee:  In the fall you will review all YIA nominations and, as a group, choose two winners to be awarded this prestigious honor.

 

Governing Board:  You will help to guide CNS to promote scientific and educational research in the area of cognitive neuroscience. You will also work with the committee to deal with any issues that arise and help us to find the best solution possible for CNS members.

 

All nominees should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent, and have an appointment at a college, university or institute (research or clinical). Nominations should be accompanied by a curriculum vita and contact information.

    Call for Papers in the Neurobiology of Leadership

    Social Cognitive Neuroscience

    Aston University, UK In recent years, the application of neuroscientific methods to leadership research has resulted in a number of exciting discoveries, and we are starting to understand more about the biological underpinnings of both leadership cognitions as well as the perception of leadership traits by subordinates. It is clear that researchers across a number of fields have been innovative, and have applied a range of biological approaches to the study of leadership. For example, we have seen the more traditional brain scanning techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) being applied to examine the neural substrates of status and social hierarchies. However, we have also seen the employment of leading-edge biological techniques such as genotyping, twin studies, and also the study of developmental stability, to advance our understanding of the various social processes that underpin leadership behaviors. While the marriage of cognitive neuroscience and leadership research will indeed pay greater dividends in the near future, it is now that we must take stock of where we stand at the moment before we advance further. The purpose of this special issue is to do just that and to provide an overview of the current state of play with regards to this marriage.

 

    The aim of this special issue is to provide a forum for a collection of key empirical studies that together will provide what could be called a ‘futurist manifesto’ for the evolution of this important area of leadership science. Such a manifesto will provide a key integrating function for the currently-diverse areas of research touching on the biology of leadership, and also hopefully inspire more researchers across disciplines to begin to investigate this area. In this way, the special issue will have a major influence on the advancement of the discipline.

 

    Empirical reports are invited from both the leadership and cognitive neuroscience community that address the biological mediation of leadership behaviours for a special issue of Leadership Quarterly that is due to be published early 2012. All submissions received will be subjected to a double-blind review process. Manuscripts should follow the usual guidelines of LQ with submissions made to Dr. Carl Senior (c.senior@aston.ac.uk).     Call for papes: Speech Recognition in Adverse Conditions

    Language and Cognitive Processes jointly with the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language

    Language and Cognitive Processes, jointly with Cognitive Neuroscience of Language, is launching a call for submissions for a special issue on:

 

    Speech Recognition in Adverse Conditions

 

    This special issue is a unique opportunity to promote the development of a unifying thematic framework for understanding the perceptual, cognitive and neuro-physiological mechanisms underpinning speech recognition in adverse conditions. In particular, we seek papers focusing on the recognition of acoustically degraded speech (e.g., speech in noise, “accented” or motor-disordered speech), speech recognition under cognitive load (e.g., divided attention, memory load) and speech recognition by theoretically relevant populations (e.g., children, elderly or non-native listeners). We welcome both cognitive and neuroscientific perspectives on the topic that report strong and original empirical data firmly grounded in theory.

    The Department of Neurology and the Biomedical Research Imaging Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are jointly recruiting a cognitive neuroscientist with expertise in functional magnetic resonance imaging for appointment as associate or full professor on the tenure track. The qualified candidate will have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. and an established record of excellence in research as reflected by peer-reviewed publications and independent external funding. He/she will be expected to build a research program in human cognitive neuroscience that will utilize the state-of the art human imaging facilities in Biomedical Research Imaging Center including a 3T Siemens Allegra head-only MR scanner and a Siemens TIM Trio 3T whole body MR scanner. Both are fully dedicated for research only. In addition, an integrated Siemens whole body MR-PET scanner has been purchased and is expected to be delivered in the near future. In 2013, the Biomedical Research Imaging Center will re-locate to a new 7 story 300,000 square foot research building on the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine campus.

    The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Intramural Research Program, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), housed at one of the premier research sites in the U.S., the 300 acre Bethesda campus of the NIH, near Washington D.C. with state-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities (MRI, PET and MEG) dedicated to research, is recruiting a senior staff scientist to join the Section on Integrated Neuroimaging. Minimum qualifications are a doctoral degree, post-doctoral training, strong publication record, and demonstrated expertise in analysis (computational and statistical methods) and synthesis of neuroimaging data. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team using neuroimaging to map brain activity as well as genetic and neurochemical mechanisms associated with normal higher cognitive function as well as dysfunction in neuropsychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, those with genetic sources of cognitive dysfunction such as Williams syndrome, and other conditions such as normal aging. In addition to collaborative work within the team, there is opportunity for outstanding candidates to develop their own projects within the Section. Possible areas of concentration include 1) neurofunctional substrate of higher cognitive function, particularly as regards working memory and frontal lobe, 2) neurofunctional bases of neuropsychiatric illnesses, and 3) neurodevelopmental neuroimaging.     We seek a postdoctoral applicant for a position at Rutgers University - Newark in New Jersey to work as part of an international interdisciplinary team studying the cognitive neuropsychology and neuroimaging of learning and decision making. Prior experience in one or more of: cognitive psychology of learning and memory, behavioral studies of brain-damaged subjects or functional neuroimaging required. Some familiarity with neuro-computational modeling helpful but not essential.

 

 

    [An additional position is also available for someone with strong computer modeling and programming skills to work on computational modeling of front-striatal-hippocampal interaction in learning, with emphasis on modeling degenerative brain disorders.)

 

    Clinical behavioral studies in our lab include studies of patients with Parkinson's disease, dystonia, drug addiction, FTD, depression, amnesia, or MCI/Alzheimer's. Collaborative projects include local partners in NY and NJ, as well as international collaborations in Italy, Turkey, Korea, China, Israel, Egypt, and the Palestinian West Bank.

Postdoctoral Position

    Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position in fMRI and Decision Making

    Michigan State Unviersity

    We are looking for a postdoc researcher to work on a project on the neural mechanisms of decision making. This is a joint position between the Neuroimaging of Perception and Attention Laboratory (PI: Taosheng Liu) and the Laboratory of Cognitive and Decision Sciences (PI: Timothy Pleskac). The research project will use mathematical models to fit choice behavioral data and fMRI to measure brain activity in decision tasks. We aim to combine these approaches to probe the fundamental mechanisms of decision making.

 

    The ideal candidate should have a strong background in mathematical models of decision making and/or a strong background in system/cognitive neuroscience. Prior experience with mathematical modeling, fMRI, and strong programming skills (e.g., C/C++, Matlab) are highly preferred. Duties include designing and implementing experiments, data collection and analysis, and writing and presenting results. Our labs are affiliated with the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience program in the Department of Psychology, the Cognitive Science Program, and the Neuroscience Program at Michigan State University. This position will offer an opportunity to participate in an NIMH-funding longitudinal neuroimaging study of a large sample of children who experienced depression during the preschool period of development (as well as psychiatric and healthy controls). The sample is being followed longitudinally to assess diagnostic psychosocial and emotion developmental variables. Three waves of structural and functional neuroimaging data are now being collected in these children as part of a collaborative R01 to Deanna Barch, Ph.D., Joan Luby, M.D., and Kelly Botteron, M.D. The post-doc opportunity will involve learning state of the art neuroimaging techniques, as well as developmental psychopathology focused on emotion development and mood disorders. The post doc will interface with 3 very active labs focusing on integrated aspects of both functional and structural imaging, as well as early emotion development and childhood depression. The functional neuroimaging includes emotion-task related measures and both task and resting state functional connectivity. The structural images focuses on computational neuroanatomy approaches to assessing both gray and white matter integrity.     The National Institute of Mental Health, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), offers a two to five year post-doctoral fellowship at one of the premier research sites in the U.S., the 300 acre Bethesda campus of the NIH, near Washington D.C. which houses state-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities (MRI, PET and MEG) dedicated to research. The strong scientific environment and outstanding equipment resources at NIH make this a unique opportunity for an outstanding scientist. The position is open to 1) recent Ph.D.'s in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroscience, neuropharmacology, computer science, or other applicable discipline or 2) M.D.'s with training in psychiatry, neurology, nuclear medicine, radiology or other relevant field. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team using neuroimaging to study genetic and neurochemical mechanisms of normal cognitive function as well as dysfunction in neuropsychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, those with genetic sources of cognitive dysfunction (e.g. Williams syndrome), and other conditions such as normal aging. Possible research areas include 1) neurofunctional bases of neuropsychiatric illnesses, especially schizophrenia, 2) neurodevelopmental neuroimaging, and 3) neurochemical underpinnings of higher cognitive function and dysfunction and 4) neurofunctional substrate of higher cognitive function, particularly working memory and frontal lobe. Familiarity with computational and statistical methods for neuroimaging (e.g. Unix, C/C++, MatLab, SPM, AFNI) confers an advantage but is not absolutely required. Some knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and MS PowerPoint, and basic HTML will be valuable, but are not required. The candidate must be able to work independently without a great deal of supervision and guidance, and must also work well in a team and have good communication skills. He or she should be comfortable performing a diverse range of tasks, multi-tasking and prioritizing the various demands of working in a busy lab environment.     Recent years have seen a huge interest in reinforcement learning models, in particular in treating them as appropriate models for high-level cognition. Despite this interest, however, empirical tests of reinforcement learning models are typically based on relatively simple conditioning paradigms. In the current PhD project, we intend to test reinforcement learning models in high-level cognition at the neural level.

    The successful candidate is expected to have a Master's degree in psychology or related discipline. He or she will carry out neuroimaging (fMRI) experiments on this topic, and is thus expected to be highly interested in experimentation, programming, data analysis, and the functioning of the human brain.

    Starting date is flexible (but preferably October 2010), and will culminate after four years in a PhD thesis. Salary is according to standard Belgian regulations.
