Psycholinguistic Approaches to Speech Recognition in Adverse Conditions
Area
Workshop
Department
8-10 March 2010
Institution/Company
University of Bristol, UK
Announcement
Speech recognition in ‘adverse conditions’ has been a familiar area of research in computer science, engineering, and hearing sciences for several decades. In contrast, most psycholinguistic theories of speech recognition are built upon evidence gathered from tasks performed by healthy listeners on carefully recorded speech, in a quiet environment, and under conditions of undivided attention.
The aim of this workshop is to gather academics from various field in order to discuss the benefits, prospects, and limitations of considering adverse conditions in models of speech recognition. The adverse conditions we will discuss will include extrinsic signal distortions (e.g., speech in noise, vocoded speech), intrinsic distortions (e.g., accented speech, conversational speech, dysarthric speech, Lombard speech), listener-specific limitations (e.g., non-native listeners, older individuals), and cognitive load (e.g., speech recognition under an attentional or memory load, multi-tasking).

When Machines Re-invent You
Famed inventor Ray Kurzweil argues that in coming decades advanced
technologies will re-make the world. During this so-called
“Technological Singularity,” all of humanity's problems could be
solved: poverty, disease, even death itself.
Other luminaries, such as Stephen Hawking and Sun Microsystems
co-founder Bill Joy, agree with Kurzweil, but warn that such changes
could include human extinction.
What should we make of such extraordinary claims? Come to New York
City on October 3 and 4, 2009 and find out.
The most acclaimed experts in fields such as quantum computing,
neuroengineering, DNA nanotechnology, life extension, brain emulation,
consciousness, virtual worlds, artificial and natural intelligence,
and more will describe their latest research and discuss its
implications for the future of humanity.
Featured Speakers:
* Ray Kurzweil, inventor, entrepreneur, and author of The Singularity
is Near. Bill Gates called him “the best person I know at predicting
the future…”
* Peter Thiel, President of Clarium Capital Management, seed investor
in Facebook, Managing Partner of Founders Fund, and co-founder of
PayPal

Grade 7: £29,704 - £35,469 p.a.
We invite applications for a Lectureship (Assistant Professor equivalent) in the School of Psychology at Bangor University. The position carries a permanent contract, subject to a 3 year probationary review. With this appointment, we specifically aim to strengthen the School’s research programme in MRI neuroimaging. We encourage applications from researchers working with neuroimaging methods in any area of inquiry.
The School has an outstanding record of teaching (ranked “Excellent” for Teaching Quality) and research (7th of 76 UK Schools in the 2008 “Research Power” table, a combined metric of research quality and quantity). Our academics benefit from an excellent research environment, which includes: low teaching loads; numerous journal clubs and technical groups; School-funded PhD studentships prioritised for new staff; ample space for laboratories; MRI-guided TMS; several EEG labs; close links with the local NHS Trust that support specialist neurological and psychiatric patient panels; an ESRC-funded Bilingualism Centre; and the £5M Bangor-led Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience that links researchers in Cardiff and Swansea. The School also benefits from its place in the College of Health and Behavioural Sciences, which includes excellent international research in areas such as motivation, exercise physiology, perceptual/motor performance, and clinical trials methodology.
Our neuroimaging capacity is centred on a research-dedicated 3T Philips MRI scanner, housed within the School of Psychology. This facility is supported by a School-funded MR physicist and image analyst. Our neuroimaging research group, comprising >20 staff, postdocs, and PhD students, meets weekly to review recent literature and to discuss proposed projects and results. The group includes specialists in: patient studies and lesion reconstruction; high-level vision; working memory; attention; ageing; eye movements; neuropsychiatry; and spectroscopy. The School operates a generous access policy for the scanner, aimed at facilitating new projects for the benefit of publications and grant applications.
Bangor is located in scenic North Wales, featuring stunning mountain and coastal landscapes, a clean and peaceful environment, and ready access to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and London.
Please quote reference number 09-9/36 when applying.
Closing date for applications: Tuesday 1st December, 2009.
